Rochdale Youth Service opens fast with other faiths during Ramadan

Date published: 07 August 2013

The Islamic Holy month of Ramadan began on Wednesday 10 July where Muslims abstain from food, drink and other temptations from sunset to sunrise for 30 days. The blessed month will end with the celebration of Eid Ul Fitr on 8 August, depending on the sighting of the moon.

On the 22nd fast Rochdale Youth Service held an ifthaar, evening meal to open the fast, at Deeplish Community Centre where councillors, PCSOs, youth workers and volunteers of all faiths attended.

Mohammed Sheraz, youth worker, commented that the purpose of the event was to "open the doors for all faiths and non-faiths to come together and learn about such an important month for Muslims, bringing everyone together as a community".

Councillor Sultan Ali added: "Events like this are needed to educate others on Islam and tackle misunderstandings which will lead to stronger community ties."

Many non- Muslims attended, one guest said: "Today’s event has been a real celebration for Rochdale’s diversity, everyone has been incredibly hospitable."

The ifthaar was opened with dates as it is traditionally done, obligatory prayers then took place and the rest of the evening was enjoyed with South Asian delicacies.
