Rochdale Online offers free advertising to credit unions
Date published: 05 August 2013
Rochdale Online is offering free advertising to credit unions to help them compete against payday loan companies.
We are emulating The Northern Echo and The Leicester Mercury in supporting the campaign led by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and the Church of England to promote credit unions.
Rochdale is a hotspot for payday lending and it is hoped that free advertising opportunities will support and promote the work of credit unions - helping redress the balance with payday lenders who can afford expensive TV advertising and high-profile sports sponsorship.
Credit Unions provide cheap, last-resort loans and save people from the vicious circle of debt many find themselves in with payday loan companies charging punitively high interest rates.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Reverend Justin Welby, who is a former banker, unveiled plans to expand the role of credit unions as an alternative to the payday lenders – opening up the prospect of having responsible money lenders based in churches.
