Criminal investigation into fire on War Office Road

Detectives have launched an investigation after a block of flats was set on fire in Rochdale.

Shortly before 5.15am on Tuesday 30 July 2013, emergency services were called to properties on War Office Road in Bamford to reports of an explosion.

The four properties have extensive damage as a result of the fire and part of the flats will be demolished and made safe.

Two of the occupants were taken to hospital for treatment, a 36-year-old man received treatment for a broken arm, burns to his body and smoke inhalation. His injuries are not life threatening.

A 63-year-old man received treatment for burns to his upper arms and shoulder and a 74-year-old woman escaped unharmed from the fire, but has been left shocked by the incident.

The surrounding properties were evacuated for a short period of time.

Chief Inspector Andrew Aston from Rochdale division, said: “We have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion which has left three people without a home.

“My officers and I are taking this extremely seriously, if you have any information about the incident, I would urge you to contact us as soon as possible.”
