New students welcomed

Date published: 27 July 2013

New students were welcomed at a transition day organised to allow current students and students-to-be to meet one another and get a taste of life at Hopwood Hall College before the new academic year starts in September.

The day saw all students take part in a number of activities. Performing arts students created mock broadcasts using the College’s radio station, while textile students created masterpieces in pencil of still life arrangements.

In the sculpture sessions students took part in a project called ‘Kick-Down’. As part of this, working in teams, they created huge structures including pyramids, cubes, towers and walls all made from polystyrene blocks. These were used to demonstrate the merits of each shape in a sculpture setting.

The finale of the session was a timed ‘kick-down’ where students tested each sculpture’s standing ability by knocking them down.

By the end of the sessions all of the students were laughing and talking together, and new friendships were created. This was great for tutors to see as this was a key aim of the day.

The end of the day offered students a chance to enjoy a BBQ before attending a student leadership course and getting the opportunity to take part in a fashion shoot.

Everyone commented on how much fun they had had during the day and tutors and students all said they were looking forward to September.
