Parking tickets issued illegally

Date published: 25 July 2013

Rochdale Council has been issuing parking tickets illegally to cars parking in parking bays and in on and off street parking.

The 2008 parking legislation rules and regulations about car parking was renewed in 2011 but vital information was not changed, making parking regulations in the borough incorrect.

When the legislation was changed, the council did not change paragraph numbers in regards to parking. The council left the paragraph as 9 (B) when it should have been changed to paragraph 10 (B) which states that vehicles should wholly be parked in a parking bay.

Barry Cropper, Chairman of Friends of Hollingworth Lake, said: “There were 278 parking tickets issued between 2011 and 2012 and I can’t imagine how many were issued in 2012-2013.”

Due to parking legislations being wrong, the council has been issuing parking tickets when they shouldn’t have been.

“Quite a number of lines and signs have been wrong for some time.”

Hollingworth Lake Visitor Centre has also been experiencing problems with their parking. Barry added: “We want people to come to Hollingworth Lake and not get a ticket.”

The council is due to submit a report to the Pennine Township with regards to the parking legislation.

Barry has sent a list of street names to the council but as yet had no response.
