ASDA staff get healthy at work

Date published: 23 July 2013

Employees swapped bacon butties for fruit when health and wellbeing teams joined them for their breakfast break.

Hundreds of staff at the ASDA/Wincanton distribution centre on Kingsway Business Park took the opportunity to get a range of advice and free checks, from having their blood pressure taken to discussing how to quit smoking.

Employees had the opportunity on their morning and afternoon breaks to chat about what it means to eat healthily, how to cope with stress and anxiety, the importance of oral health and how they could improve their fitness by making small changes to their lifestyle. They also had their BMI measured, learnt how to reduce back pain and were able to discuss their travel to work opportunities, sign up for free cycle training and take advantage of an onsite bicycle repair and maintenance service.

Lesley Hall, HR Manager for ASDA Wincanton, said: “It has been great for employees to have the chance to take advantage of everything here today. The health and wellbeing of our employees is really important to us and to be able to offer all this during their breaks has made it as easy as possible for them to find out about their current health, and also what they can do if they need to improve it.”

Helen Skidmore, from Rochdale Council’s Public Health team, said: “It was great to find out that some of the workers have some healthy lifestyle habits already, but the health and wellbeing teams were able to give people advice on small changes that can add up to a real improvement in health, such as cutting out the odd pint or tweaking favourite meals to be healthier.”

The Health and Wellbeing event was organised by Rochdale Development Agency, Rochdale Council’s Public Health Team and Transport for Greater Manchester.
