Turf Hill Junior Wardens off to a flying start

Date published: 23 July 2013

After only being open for 10 weeks, the Rochdale Boroughwide Housing (RBH) Junior Wardens of Turf Hill have already shown their worth to their community, and they received recognition for their achievements.

The Junior Warden scheme empowers young people aged 8-12 to play vital roles improving their neighbourhood and community. RBH runs a number of schemes across the Borough, and has worked with the community development co-operative “Everyday People” to launch a new programme on Turf Hill.

Chris Woodruff, RBH Communities Action Worker, said: “The Junior Wardens come along every Wednesday evening to have some fun and get together but at the same time there’s a strong message in place which encourages the young people to have pride in and take responsibility for their community in the future”

Over the last 10 weeks the Junior Wardens have been doing various activities, including; multimedia and IT; art and craft, making gardens out of recycled materials; and photography, to identify the good and bad things about their community. The activities all serve the purpose of teaching the Junior Wardens about being a responsible and productive member of society.

The dedication of the Junior Wardens to the project was rewarded at the presentation evening on Wednesday 17 July, where they received certificates and medals to celebrate their achievement.
