Number One Riverside in final of Building of the Year Award

Date published: 22 July 2013

Number One Riverside, Rochdale's new council offices, is on the shortlist for the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce Building of the Year Award.

Judged by the Chamber’s Property and Construction Committee, the final four buildings and developments are:

  • Number One Riverside
  • ITV's new Coronation Street production centre at MediaCityUK
  • The Air Traffic Control Tower at Manchester Airport
  • The Pavilion at Lancashire County Cricket Club

The Committee, which consists of 16 professionals from a range of businesses in the property and construction sector, will be undertaking site visits over the next few weeks before making its final decision. The winning building will be announced at the Chamber’s Property and Construction Annual Dinner at The Midland Hotel on 31 October.

Commenting on the shortlist, Mike Gibson, Chairman of the Chamber’s Property and Construction Committee, said: “This competition celebrates the innovative buildings that are constructed in our region each year, and showcases the successful collaborations that take place between talented project teams in our industry and their clients.

"This year we invited nominations from everyone in our sector and, in spite of the difficult economic conditions the industry has faced, we received many worthy entries for new buildings from across Greater Manchester.

"The final four buildings each, in their own way, make a significant contribution to our city region in terms construction and development.

“We'll be visiting each of the shortlisted buildings before making our decision and we look forward to this prestigious award being presented by Sir Howard Bernstein at our Annual Dinner on 31 October."

Councillor Peter Williams, cabinet member for economic development and customer services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “Number One Riverside embodies Rochdale’s flourishing and sustainable future. It’s a fine example of modern architecture that exploits the latest energy efficient technologies as we move towards creating a greener borough. It sets the standard for our planned £250m transformation of the town centre.

“Number One Riverside is practical and simply beautiful. It is a great honour for our new building to be shortlisted for this prestigious award.”

Last year's winner was The Space Youth Intervention Centre for 42nd Street in Manchester and previous winners have included MediaCity UK and the People's History Museum.
