Matthew Moss Year 10 receive award

Date published: 19 July 2013

Mrs Jane Miller’s Year 10 science class have just received their certificates for completing their John Muir Award. The John Muir is an award scheme that recognises learning about biodiversity, habitats, conservation and discovering new areas of countryside. This Award scheme complements the Adventure School status that Matthew Moss has achieved.

The group have completed many projects over the last school year, they have planted 100’s of trees, created habitats, worked with the wonderful Ranger Services in Healey Dell, Springfield Park and the Roch Valley. They received expert tuition from Rangers, Richard Whittle, Bob Beavan and Mike Cummings.

The group also had the opportunity to work with the horticultural expert Nick Dent from Springhill Hospice.

The learners also had an insight to conservation of the Roch Valley when they had a visit in school from Susan Waymont, who is the Ecologist for Greater Manchester Local Authorities.

The group were supported by Mrs Diane Pullan on most of their outdoor visits and Mr Roy Down, Outdoor Learning Co-ordinator.

Mr Down said: ‘’This group of learners have been out and about in some atrocious weather conditions over winter, but it did not deter them one bit! In fact I think it added the character of this group.

"It has been a pleasure working on this Award with them.’"

Mrs Miller said: ‘’The pupils did not always realise that being outside meant they are in the best learning environment they could be in.’’

"It might have been cold and wet, but they always asked, ‘when are we going again’."
