Wardle helps ex-head girl with charity fundraising

Date published: 20 July 2013

On the last day of term, Wardle High School held a non-uniform day to help one of their ex-students, Head Girl Niamh Trainor, to raise money for Retrak, a Manchester Fire Service/Police charity that enables volunteers from their services to work overseas.

Having left Wardle High School in 2012, Niamh has since gone on to work in the fire service and become a cadet instructor.

Retrak works to enable street children to move from a life of vulnerability, exclusion and poverty living on the streets, to a life within a positive family or community where all household members are healthy, emotionally well, safe, educated and trained and economically dependent.

They prevent highly vulnerable children being pushed to street life by working alongside families and communities to ensure they have the resources and skills to care for children.

As part of Retrak's work, employees from the fire service, and employees from the police service were given the opportunity to apply to become volunteers to fly out to Ethiopia and Uganda to meet some of the street children and work closely with them to help them build better lives for themselves; as a result of this volunteers are asked to raise a minimum of £2,000 to go towards Retrak.

In November, Niamh will be working directly with the street children in a renovation centre in Africa doing different activities with them each day to get them off the streets. They will be providing them with meals, fresh water and different activities such as sports, crafts, painting, singing and alsoeducational resources.
