The Newcomen Society to visit Ellenroad Engine House
Date published: 17 July 2013
On Thursday 18 July, the Newcomen Society will be visiting the Ellenroad Engine House in Rochdale.
Founded in 1920, the Newcomen Society is the oldest society in the world specialising in the history of engineering and technology. It has published over a thousand papers, which is an invaluable archive of original research material for historians.
The tour will be led by a friend of Ellenroad, Ian Gibson, who is formerly Curator of Industrial Heritage and later Director of Lancashire Museum Service.
After visiting several sites during the day they will arrive at the Engine House for their private tour before returning back to Manchester for their evening programme.
John Boucher, who is an industrial heritage enthusiast, will also be paying a visit. He will be officially delivering an early form of electric generator unit on "permanent" loan and other historical artefacts.
It’s been a busy time for Ellenroad Engine House, last week they featured in the ITV1 programme ‘How the North was Built’ with Robson Green, and last night at 9.00pm Ellenroad Engine House aslo featured in episode 2.
