Norden Community Primary and St James CE Primary have been celebrating success in the Manchester Sainsbury’s School Games. Norden won Year 3 and 4 mini tennis whilst St James CE Primary took first place in the Year 3 and 4 golf.

A number of other schools in the borough achieve top three finishes. St James came thrid in Year 5/6 rounders, second in Year 5/6 golf and second in KS2 disability, which was shared with other Rochdale schools, Parkfield, Newhey, St Vincent.

Cardinal Langley High School and St Cuthbert’s both achieved third place finishes in Year 7/8 tennis and Year 7 quadkids athletics respectively.

Over 1,600 young athletes and 200 young volunteers from schools across the county competed in 11 sports across eight venues.

The main event team was supported by 200 young leaders who formed the School Games Crew and helped run the competitions.

The Games were opened by key 103 DJ Alex James, up and coming boy band ReConnected and past athletes Darren Campbell and Sarah Stevenson. Young dance groups from Greater Manchester schools were also at the opening ceremony at the Regional Athletics Arena.

Matt Stocks, Development Manager for Children and Young People at GreaterSport commented: “A year on from the Olympic and Paralympic games and it’s great to see the effect that is still happening around sport in our county.

“It’s been a fantastic day, from start to finish. There have been some top sporting performers, great entertainment in the opening ceremony and fantastic leadership from the young volunteers.”
