Beech House School

Date published: 11 July 2013

The end of the GCSE examination period is traditionally being marked nowadays by some sort of celebration and this has evolved into a grand occasion, with pupils dressing up in their finery and a chance to show this off with a meal and a dance afterwards.

Our Prom Committee this year chose a different venue from the last couple of years, the Norton Grange Hotel, and it was there where we all met up on Friday.

Unfortunately the British summer was not ‘playing ball’ and so the numerous photographs taken to mark the event had to be done indoors, but spirits were not dampened as the evening progressed.

After the meal, Mrs. White stood up to give her speech, using the theme of local transport (the hotel is near a canal, the railway and a motorway).

The pupils have come to the end of the first part of their itinerary of their life’s journey, one in which they have moved slowly but steadily, and are about to change tracks, so to speak, onto the next, before being let loose on the motorway of life.

To ensure they take away with them fond memories of the school, and in particular the staff, she gathered up some willing volunteers from the teachers their and they did a routine to Sam Cooke’s ‘Wonderful World’ - to much hilarity!

Mrs. White then invited everyone onto the dance floor to start the dancing, with Alice Cooper’s ‘School’s Out’.

During the course of the rest of the evening votes were cast and counted for the Prom King and Queen. It was a close call but congratulations to Harry Hayden and Paige Bramley for being chosen.

Thanks to the committee for organising the event, to Friends of Beech House for their contribution and to all the pupils for making it such a pleasant event.

Bronze Award

A group of Year 9 and 10 pupils spent the weekend acquainting themselves with the Rivington Pike area as part of their Bronze Award.

Miss Whitehead dropped the group off on Saturday morning near Horwich and they had to navigate themselves northwards to the campsite near Heapey.

An early error in the woods almost set the off course but they eventually arrived at the site, where Mr. and Mrs. White were to greet them.

In the evening drizzle the pupils erected their tents and cooked themselves a hot meal before retiring for the night, the day’s exertions and fresh air having taken their toll. It was up at 6 .00am on Sunday to prepare as hearty a breakfast as possible, break camp, then head off over the moors to meet up with Miss Whitehead. Adam from the organising company was there to oversee everything - and thanks to him for his sense of humour in helping the pupils through their expedition.

St John’s First Aid Final

The school entered two teams in the North West Regional St John’s First Aid Final. Both teams had to complete a range of tasks related to first aid skills and answer questions. The junior team finished third and the senior team finished fourth. A big thank-you to Mrs Gregory for giving up her time to come into school and teach the children these valuable life skills.

A day in the life of a college student

9H have been to Bury College to start to undertake a day in the life of a college student. The pupils were mixed with pupils from the other schools and studied A-Level subjects such as electronic music, psychology, art and design and many more. The pupils were allowed to tour the campus and they even had enrichment opportunities in the afternoon such as football, dodgeball and nail art. The day has provided the pupils with a sound base to start thinking about college.
