Fusilier Lee Rigby funeral

In accordance with the wishes of Fusilier Lee Rigby’s family, there will be a private church service in Bury on Thursday 11 July. They have asked for privacy while Lee is laid to rest at his burial at Middleton Cemetery (Boarshaw) on Friday 12 July. To honour this request, people wishing to pay their respects are strongly advised to avoid the cemetery and Boarshaw Road.

  • Traffic management measures and parking restrictions: The Junction of Market Place and Harbord Street and the junction of Townley Street and Old Hall Street will be closed from 6am on Friday 12 July. 
  • Middleton Cemetery: There will be no parking permitted along the cemetery part of Boarshaw Road between 6am – 1pm on Friday 12 July. There will also be ‘No Waiting’ allowed during this time and the restricted area will be clearly marked. 
  • Middleton Arena is closed to the public from 11pm on Thursday 11 July and all day on the 12 July 2013. The Arena will open again on Saturday 13 July at 8.30am. The car park at the rear of the arena will be closed from 11pm on Thursday 11 of July. The front of the Middleton Arena car park and the council car park immediately in front of the arena will be closed off from 6am on Friday 12 July. 
  • People may wish to place flowers as the cortege passes and there will be community representatives to collect the flowers behind the cortege. These will be placed respectfully within the cemetery as agreed with Lee’s family. 

The public is asked not to attend the area around Boarshaw Road. 

Those wishing to pay their respects on Friday 12 July are advised they can do so in the following ways:

  • Line the streets in Bury town centre. Bus services will be provided by Transport for Greater Manchester from Middleton to Bury and Rochdale to Bury. The 163 bus, in particular, will be changed to double deckers and will run every 10-15 minutes. Details can be found at: www.tfgm.com 
  • Observe the cortege’s passage along Hollin Lane (Langley side) between Langley Lane and Rochdale Road, Middleton from approximately 12 midday on Friday 12 July. 
  • Flowers can continue to be placed at Middleton Gardens. 
  • The book of condolence is available during this time at Middleton, Heywood and Littleborough libraries as well as Rochdale Town Hall.
