Plans approved for walking and cycling route

Date published: 05 July 2013

Plans have been approved for a high quality cycleway between Rochdale and Rawtenstall.

The idea was initially put forward by cycling enthusiasts in the Rossendale area. The Rossendale and Lancashire County Council then jointly commissioned John Grimshaw, the founder of national cycle charity Sustrans, to do a detailed analysis of any potential that the route may have.

A lot of the old paths along the route are currently seen as being unsuitable for normal walkers and cyclists. These plans would transform them into something which could be used by everyone. This would involve making it accessible to people with disabilities and for horse riders.

Rochdale Council has funded the work in the Rochdale area.

Barnaby Fryer from Rochdale Council planning department said: “The main aim of this is to connect Rochdale to other communities through sustainable means.

“We want to make cycling more accessible and for it to become a healthy leisure activity. Cycling isn’t just about the athletes you see in the media; it should be something for something for everyone.”

This view is supported by Katie Gee of Rossendale Council: “We got involved with it for a number of different reasons, first of all less people using their cars less often is a huge positive as it’s better for the environment.

“We also believe it will be beneficial to the health of the people as a better walking and cycling path will hopefully mean more people exercising.”

The design scheme should be completed by August and the plans will be made available to the public in September.
