Magnum arrives in force

Date published: 05 July 2013

British Transport Police is targeting rail thieves thanks to its latest operation designed to keep passengers’ property safe.

Operation Magnum, which has been launched nationally to tackle a rise in thefts of luggage and other property, will see officers out and about on the rail network giving advice to passengers and to take actions against criminals.

To mark the start of the operation a number of special surgeries were held to pass on tips to help people protect their valuables when travelling on the rail network. Officers also carried out plain-clothes patrols to target thieves who prey on unsuspecting rail users.

Detective Inspector Andrea Rainey said: “Operation Magnum is a long term, national initiative that aims to reduce theft by disrupting and deterring thieves who target unsuspecting commuters and tourists.

“We want to create a hostile environment for thieves, making it as difficult as we can for them to operate on any part of the railway network.

DI Rainey added: “As well as targeting thieves we want to educate members of the public about how they can best look after their property on crowded trains.

“Always remember to keep your luggage close by and check it regularly. Keep valuables hidden if you’re going to sleep on a train and always zip up any hand or shoulder bags.

“Mobile phones and electronic tablets are particularly attractive to thieves so, where possible, try not to advertise where these items are and never leave them unattended.”

To mark the start of Operation Magnum British Transport Police is calling on the public to help trace a number of people officers want to speak to in connection with thefts across the region.
