Military funeral set for Drummer Lee Rigby

Drummer Lee Rigby will receive a military funeral on Friday 12 July in Bury the MOD has confirmed. The soldier, from Middleton, who was attacked in south east London in May, will be given a private service at Bury Parish Church, broadcast to outsiders via a PA system.

A parade of drummers will escort the soldier’s body on 11 July where they will be met by a guard of honour of 40 soldiers drawn from the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Members of the soldiers regiment will then guard his body over night.

A private committal will take place at Middleton Cemetery after the Chaplain of 2nd Battalion of Royal Regiment of Fusiliers conducts a service for the family.

Drummer Rigby’s regiment the 2nd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, has strong ties with Bury as their roots go back to the Bury-based Lancashire Fusiliers.

Drummer Rigby was attacked as he returned to base in Woolwich. He later died from multiple cut and stab wounds.

Michael Adebolajo, 28, from Romford, East London, and Michael Adebowale, 22, from Greenwich, south-east London are accused of his murder. Both men will enter pleas at a plea and case management hearing on 27 September and will face trial on 18 November.
