REAG celebrates its birthday

Date published: 02 July 2013

The Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) has celebrated its first birthday. The group was formed last year after a group of residents became tired of living with the terrible levels of litter and fly tipping.

At the time, the co-ordinators Christine Mathewson and Ghulam Rasul Shahzad made a joint presentation about the importance of improving the environment in the town.

A year on, their aim is the same and they are calling on the people of Rochdale to look after their town.

Ghulam Rasul Shahzad said: “We should have pride in our town; we need to look after the environment for the future generations.”

The group has done a lot of work and Mr Shahzad says the group has been a success but need to start influencing others: “It’s not just about our group cleaning up areas throughout Rochdale; we need to encourage everyone to look after their own environment.”

"This is a project that is ongoing and the environment is a concern that will always be around. The people of REAG want to solve the problems and seem very dedicated.

“We have ten active committee members who are working every Saturday to make this a nicer place to live.”
