'From Paper to Page: The Illustrations of Alice Melvin and Catherine Rayner'

Date published: 02 July 2013

Two award-winning children's picture book writers and illustrators exhibit their work in the Art Gallery at Touchstones from Saturday 6 July to Saturday 7 September.

Alice Melvin and Catherine Rayner both studied at Edinburgh College of Art and became friends. They have each gone on to create a number of very successful children's books – Alice, who is published by Tate Publishing, is currently working on her fourth book and Catherine, who is published by Macmillan Children's Books, Little Tiger Press and Orchard Books, is about to publish her tenth book.

In the exhibition Sally's journey down the high street can be followed and birds from Alice Melvin's books 'The High Street' and 'Counting Birds' can be counted.

Discover more about Sylvia and Bird's adventures, encounter Augustus and His Smile and meet Norris, the Bear Who Shared amongst the characters from Catherine Rayner's books.

Alice and Catherine have also included some sketches and working drawings to show the process of making their books.

The exhibition includes a hands-on reading and activity area for children and families. You can choose your favourite illustration on display and then read the book it's from. There are also activity sheets and imaginative play activities inspired by Alice and Catherine's work.
