Heywood 1940s weekend

Date published: 29 June 2013

The people of Heywood remembered those that made sacrifices during World War Two by holding a 1940s weekend.

A variety of sights and sounds greeted the general public as they arrived outside the Heywood Phoenix Centre, just one of many events held in Heywood throughout the weekend.

Many local people dressed as soldiers and several children came dressed as evacuees.

Mayor of Rochdale, Peter Rush, commented: “It’s fantastic to see younger people getting involved and helping to keep the memories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“As for the event as a whole, it’s pleasing to see places within the borough of Rochdale playing such an important role.”

Gillian and Colin Hinsley opened a stall selling some of their old books. They are hoping to raising as much money as possible for the Macmillan Cancer charity over the weekend.

Bob and Linda Bonner were raising money for the Greater Manchester Fire Service Museum. Mr and Mrs Bonner both said: “It’s nice to see our history being remembered.”

Soft drinks from the 1940s, numerous cakes and sweets from the era were being sold and there was a model steam strain from the 1940s, which got the children of Heywood and their parents very excited.

The 1940s weekend continues on Sunday 30 June at Collop Gate Farm with military vehicles in action, military displays, stalls and various vintage attractions, a fairground and a bouncy castle.

Collop Gate Farm, Manchester Road, Heywood OL10 2PX (plenty of free parking in the fields).
Entry fee of £4.00 per adult, £2.00 per child (3-16), children under 3 free, or you can buy a family ticket for £10.00 (2 adults, 2 children).
