March and rally against 'drastic cuts'
Date published: 29 June 2013
There was a march and rally today (29 June) in Rochdale Town Centre in support of 114 UNISON members in an attempt to bring their employer, Future Directions CIC, back to the table to re-look at the "drastic cuts" they have imposed.
Future Directions CIC, established by Calderstones NHS to deliver services at a reduced cost, has a contract from Rochdale Council to provide supported living services in the Borough.
UNISON allege the company took on the contract knowing that they would be unable to maintain terms and conditions of staff. Cuts they say include losses to pay, removal of enhancements, reduced sick pay scheme and holiday entitlement. It is understood nearly 100 unfair dismissal cases will be lodged for members this week.
Unison spokeswoman Helen Harrison said: "The fight that this group of workers face today could be that of any worker tomorrow. They have had their employment rights breached, pay slashed and conditions reduced."
Future Directions said: "Unfortunately, it is not sustainable in the current climate to maintain the existing staff on their previous terms and conditions."
The union members have already taken five days action and are reported to be about to embark on four more.
