GMP in race smear campaign probe

Greater Manchester Police is investigating claims officers were asked to gather information on people attending the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry hearings.

Two probes have been launched after GMP became embroiled in the alleged campaign to smear the family and friends of the murdered teenager. The force has also referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, following worries over an internal memo allegedly asking for information on “groups and individuals” likely to attend the Macpherson hearing in Manchester in 1998.

Assistant Chief Constable Dawn Copley revealed GMP is aware of concerns raised over the memo.

“We are taking these concerns very seriously and this matter will be fully investigated.

“We understand this is a very sensitive and emotive subject for all concerned.”

The 18 year old was fatally stabbed in a racist attack in south east London in 1993.
