Armed Forces Day support

Date published: 27 June 2013

MEP Paul Nuttall has thrown his support behind the campaign for a National Defence Medal.

The local UKIP Euro-MP is also backing Armed Forces Day, which is being celebrated this Saturday (29 June).

"The National Defence Medal campaign is seeking the creation of a medal for all those who have served in uniform for the Crown," he explained.

"In particular, this would apply to National Servicemen and women; all those who have been in the Regular Services as well as those who have served as volunteers and reserves in whatever capacity.

"The UK Independence Party was the first national political party to include this in its election manifesto, in 2010, and the other parties only promised the same later.

"I fully support both the Armed Forces Day and the medal campaign," said Mr Nuttall, UKIP Deputy Leader.

Later this year Parliament is due to discuss the recommendations in Sir John Holmes medal review about the medal. They have already approved the Arctic Star and a clasp for Bomber Command as a result of this review.
