Charity ball raises thousands for The Christie

Date published: 27 June 2013

The Rochdale Exchange shopping centre raised a massive £7,332.62 for The Christie at their sixth annual Charity Ball.

The 1920s Fellas and Flappers themed evening took place at the Town Hall.

Guests were greeted with a champagne reception and a live jazz trio to get them in the mood for the charity event.

The Fellas and Flappers all had the chance to try their luck at the casino, raising £948 for the charity.

Throughout the evening guests were wined and dined with a four course meal, and then entertained by professional singer Paul Pashley.

There were prizes up for grabs in the raffle and auction, donated by local companies and shops, on the night all in aid of a very worthy charity.

The Retailer Excellence Awards winners were announced.

Fighting off competition from Clarks and Beales, River Island took away the Best Dressed Window award, presented  by KD Decoratives.

Boots won the Best Customer Service award, beating River Island and Virgin Media.

Lesley Brogden walked away on the evening as the Best Employee with a trophy and selection of chocolate treats.

Beales was announced as the Best Performing Store in the Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre, an award voted for by the management team.

A special recognition award was also revealed  to one "very deserving lady", Helen Mollineux. Helen works as part of the cleaning team at Rochdale Exchange, and her name was mentioned frequently in the public votes back in March. Helen was overwhelmed by the publics’ kindness and was presented with a trophy.

Proceeds totalling £7,332.62 will be presented to The Christie which specialises in cancer treatment, research and education and is the largest cancer centre in Europe. They treat over 40,000 patients a year from across Greater Manchester, the North-West and the UK and are dedicated to helping all those affected by cancer. Both now and in the future.

Natalie Pike, Corporate Development Manager for The Christie commented: "We would like to thank the Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre for the phenomenal amount of money raised at the recent charity ball. The night was a huge success and the passion shown for The Christie by the whole team is so evident in the amount raised."

Lorenzo O’Reilly, Centre Manager at Rochdale Exchange said: "We are extremely pleased that the Fellas and Flappers theme helped us to raise the largest sum to date at our Charity Ball. This event truly showed what the people of Rochdale can do when they band together for such a worthy cause. Rochdale Exchange is proud to help facilitate getting the mobile chemotherapy unit on the road, as part of the BBC One Million Pound Appeal.”
