Matthew Moss campaigns to “Send My Friend”

Date published: 26 June 2013

Pupils of Matthew Moss High School made a big impression this week as they met with Simon Danczuk MP to tell him about the “Send My Friend” campaign, which is fighting to ensure that every child in the world is in primary education by 2015.

Mr Danczuk was greeted by the learners of Year 9, lined around the whole of the front of the school, carrying hundreds of figures representing the 1.7 million teachers missing in the world.

This year the campaign, which aims to raise money rather than awareness, focussed on the fact that 60 million children are still unable to go to school because of a lack of teachers.

The students had also written Mr Danczuk over 700 letters, asking him to remind David Cameron to keep his promise to put pressure on other world leaders to join the campaign.

Mr Danczuk had been more than happy to come in to meet youngsters, telling them that he was glad that, although he knew about the campaign, he was pleased they’d brought it to his attention, promising to put it “higher on his agenda”. He spent an hour with the learners, who asked him probing questions about what he would do once the campaign had finished and how much he knew about the campaign itself.

“I am so impressed with the learners here,” he said, “their questioning skills are superb.”

Ghulam Shahzad, OBE, who has been helping the learners since the start of this campaign, was there to greet Mr Danczuk and support the year group. “I am always happy to help the learners at Matthew Moss,” he enthused. “The school encourages young people to think for themselves. This is such a good cause and one I am personally involved with and it makes a real difference.”

“Send My Friend” was started in the year 2000 to encourage global education. Matthew Moss has supported this campaign for five years and will continue to do so.
