Big things are expected of the Jaywalkers

Date published: 26 June 2013

Having been described as “virtuosic, exciting and entertaining” it seems like people are starting to take notice of the folk band Jaywalkers.

Combining influences from folk, bluegrass, country and western swing music they released their second CD ‘Early for a Thursday’ last year before playing at over 24 festivals.

A highlight for the band was playing in front of 2,000 music lovers at Shrewsbury Music Festival.

This success has resulted in them receiving the title of Third Best Bluegrass Band in Europe.

They’ve been working hard to develop a following throughout the UK but want to focus on increasing the fan base in the band members’ home towns.

Michael Giverin, the bands mandolin player, now writes most of the band's material. A lot of this is based on local Lancashire industrial and mythical tales.

Michael said: “Having lived in Healey I started in the Whitworth and Healey Brass Band and my passion developed from there.

Lee Rig, a brass teacher from Healey Primary school, was a big influence on my life as a musician.”

Jaywalkers will be playing at the Riverside in Whitworth on Monday 1 July.
