Athletic students at Hopwood Hall College donned their running shoes to raise £3,000 in memory of former pupil Drummer Lee Rigby.
A keen supporter of Help for Heroes, Mr Rigby was wearing the charity’s t-shirt when he was killed, prompting Hopwood’s sport and uniformed public services students to donate proceeds from their 5km fun run.
The fundraising was organised in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Rochdale East and Hopwood Hall’s centre director for sport and uniformed public services Terry Morley was delighted with his pupils’ efforts.
“The turnout was fantastic and to raise £3,000 is really great,” he said.
“We knew Drummer Lee Rigby played a big part in raising money for Help for Heroes so we felt it would be a fitting tribute to his memory to raise money for them.”
In total more than 300 students from the UPS course and the Sports Academy took part in the run at Hopwood’s Middleton campus to raise the money.
A memorial service and five-minute silence for Mr Rigby will be held at locations across the country today (Sunday 23 June), including Middleton Gardens from 11.30am.
