Litter louts convicted
Date published: 22 June 2013
Kile Webster and Cherie Bunnell have been found guilty of the offence of littering by Bury and Rochdale Magistrates’ Court.
Webster of Beswicke Royds Street, Rochdale and Bunnell of Whitworth Road, Rochdale were each seen throwing lighted cigarette ends on the floor on Yorkshire Street, Rochdale and leaving them there.
They were each approached by Corporate Enforcement Officers who witnessed the offences and were issued with Fixed Penalty Notices for littering. Both Mr Webster and Ms Bunnell chose not to pay the Fixed Penalty Notice issued to them.
Neither were in court as magistrates found the pair guilty of breaching Section 87 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. The court fined them £75 each, and ordered them to pay in excess of £200 each in costs and a further £20 each victim surcharge
Cabinet member for communities, Councillor Sultan Ali said: “The Council’s Corporate Enforcement Officers regularly patrol all areas of the borough. If they see offences such as littering or people failing to clean up after their dogs they will offer those responsible a Fixed Penalty Notice.
“In the event that those Fixed Penalty Notices are not paid, the individuals will be prosecuted and incur considerably more cost to themselves.”
