Eco-School Council Highly commended

Date published: 17 June 2013

The Eco-School Council from St John with St Michael CE Primary School in Shawforth, Rossendale, entered the Lancashire Chairman’s Challenge 2013.

The children had to think of an initiative that they could introduce into school to enhance children’s awareness of staying safe.

They brainstormed ideas and held a Safety Week in February and invited local police, fire officers, paramedics as well as the lolly pop lady into school.

They also wrote letters to other local people asking them for their help.

The Eco-School Council found colouring sheets, fact sheets and puzzles that linked with all the different aspects that they were looking at.

Each day was dedicated to a specific safety topic.

They looked at Water Safety, Road Safety, Stranger Danger, Internet safety, Fire safety and a few others.

The week was a huge success and the children also made scrap books to link with the 5 aspects of wellbeing which are: Be active, Take notice of the world around you, Connect with others, Keep Learning and Give to others.

The scrap books are like a learning journey for the children. They look amazing!

The Eco-School Council made it to the finals beating other schools to get into the top 6.
The children, along with Miss Kenyon (Eco-Council coordinator), Mrs Driver (Eco-Grounds project maintenance manager), Mr Sims (Governor) and Mr Entwistle (Chair of Governors and also a road traffic police officer) travelled to Preston along with 6 children to present a spoken presentation to a panel of judges.

The children did extremely well and were given a highly commended runners up certificate and £50. We are very proud of them all - Well Done!
