Health and social care carer support

Date published: 14 June 2013

A three-year strategy for continued help and support for carers in the borough has been launched to coincide with National Carers Week 2013.

The strategy, developed in partnership with carers, the Council, NHS and Rochdale Borough’s Carers Association, is aimed at improving services for carers and enhancing the quality of life for people they care for.

It intends to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of health and social care and aims to address all carers’ needs including adult carers, parent carers and young carers. It is the first strategy ever to be produced in conjunction with health partners.

Across Rochdale Borough there is estimated to be over 23,260 carers, equating to 10.6 percent of the population above the national average (10.2 percent). Nationally another 6000 people take on a caring responsibility every day. It is estimated that each carer saves the local economy £18.5k a year which equates to a total national saving of £119bn a year.

Speaking at the launch, Rochdale Borough Council Leader Colin Lambert said: “Rest and time for oneself is essential for maintaining our wellbeing. Being a carer means you often put your own needs last. What I’ve learnt is that everyone needs a break. A rest on prescription is sometimes the best medicine.

“We value the role you all play in providing unpaid help and support to loved ones. Reduced levels of caring by carers could be catastrophic to health and social care budgets. So we must care for our carers and I urge more people across the borough in a caring role to reach out to The Carers’ Resource for support.”

The Carers’ Resource offers carers free, regular and personalised short breaks as well as the opportunity to access various support groups and signposting or referrals to services that can help in their caring situation.

Dr Chris Duffy, Chairman of Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The dedication and commitment that carers selflessly show in looking after their loved ones is something to be admired. Carers play a vital role in the community but it’s important we remember to support them to stay healthy and well so they can continue to improve the lives of the people they care for. This strategy aims to do just that.”

Also, speaking at the launch, Councillor Jean Hornby, cabinet member for adult services added: “It’s pertinent during Carers Week to say a huge thank you to you all.

"I learnt a wonderful fact today that the number of carers nationwide is more than the entire NHS workforce. The care you provide unconditionally every day is a testament to your dedication and commitment. In my eyes you’re all brilliant and we could not do without you! I very much welcome this joint strategy that pledges on going support for you all.”
