‘Go Steady’ message for public transport users

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has started a new drive to keep vulnerable people safe and secure when using public transport.

The ‘Go Steady’ campaign is launching during ‘Falls Awareness Week’ (17-21 June) which asks people to put their ‘Best Foot Forward’ by staying upright and secure.

The key element of ‘Go Steady’ is a website – www.tfgm.com/gosteady – which offers advice on avoiding falls during boarding, whilst on and getting off public transport.

The website provides excellent advice for anyone vulnerable to falls - and is a useful resource for anyone who cares for, or works with older people.

Leaflets and posters will also be put up around the public transport network in Greater Manchester to raise awareness of the initiative. TfGM will also be contacting health bodies and local authorities to tell them about the advice available.

A key remit of TfGM is to administer the region’s concessionary travel pass scheme for older and disabled people.

Complementing the concessionary travel scheme, the ‘Go Steady’ initiative is intended to make sure that advice on how to stay safe when making a journey is available.

Councillor Andrew Fender, Chairman of the TfGM Committee, said: “We take our corporate responsibilities seriously as a transport authority and this is why we run initiatives like the ‘Go Steady’ campaign.

“The campaign will offer vulnerable and elderly people a whole host of information on staying safe whilst making journeys on public transport.

“The timing of ‘Go Steady’ is also important as Age UK’s National Falls Awareness Week takes place during the launch of our campaign.

“The week aims to help older people stay safe whilst going about their everyday lives, and travel plays a big part in how we go about our daily business.”
