Police issue warning to residents and motorists in Middleton and Heywood

Date published: 12 June 2013

Police are warning residents to be on their guard following a spate of burglaries and vehicle crimes in Middleton and Heywood.

An operation has been put in place where officers will be patrolling day and night in an attempt to catch offenders and bring them to justice.

Police are reminding people to lock doors and windows and not leave valuables on display, and community support officers will distribute crime prevention leaflets and alert people if their businesses, homes or vehicles are insecure.

One in three burglaries are still happening because windows and doors are left insecure, so by locking up their properties residents can greatly reduce the chances of being burgled.

Sergeant Tim O’Callaghan of the Rochdale South Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "There will be a big drive to tackle the burglary and vehicle problem and residents should expect to be made aware of the insecurities to their properties. Residents should remain on guard to help us continue to tackle this issue.

“As the weather becomes milder, people are more likely to open a window or patio door to let some fresh air in. While there is nothing wrong with this, even the smallest windows can provide burglars with an opportunity, so if you leave the room or go out, make sure you lock it again.

“I’d also advise residents to use their alarm if they have one, set your timer light to come on if you are out or on holiday, and avoid leaving car keys and laptops on view to prevent hook and cane type burglaries. Finally, if you have an alley-gate in your area please ensure that it is locked."

If you see anything suspicious please contact police on 101 or dial 999 if a crime is in progress.

To pass on information anonymously to the police, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
