Blessed with superb weather, Milnrow & Newhey Carnival saw its biggest turn out for years as hundreds took part in the parade and thousands lined the streets of Newhey and Milnrow, and gathered in Milnrow Park, to watch and cheer.

The carnival parade, led by Wardle Band as Milnrow Band was unavailable, started from Haugh Lane at 1.00pm today (Sunday 9 June) and meandered along Newhey Road, Station Road, Equitable Street, Harbour Lane North, Bridge Street, Dale Street into Milnrow Park for the féte.

In Milnrow Park there was a fun fair, live music, archery and stalls from 11.00am and going on into the evening until 8.00pm.

Mayor of Rochdale, Peter Rush, who took part in the carnival parade, said: "It was an absolute pleasure to be invited. A wonderful carnival full of happy people and families. It was really good to see all the old people and lots of charities represented. Overall, an excellent day in the sunshine. I am very happy."

Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk enjoyed the carnival with his wife, Karen, he said: "A great parade, lots of people out. Well done everyone involved."

Paul Kettle, Chairman of Milnrow & Newhey Canival Committee said: “A momentous carnival with a record number of people, over 3,000 coming through the gates of the park on Sunday.

The Fair in the park was a huge success with hundreds of people sitting on the hill in the sunshine until 8.00pm singing and dancing to a variety of bands.”

Dave Bamford, Milnrow Carnival Committee and Waggon Inn landlord, said: “A fantastic turn out from the community."

Keith Swift said: “The carnival was a terrific success. Huge crowds lined the route from Newhey.

Having the carnival fete in the park was a great success; I have never seen the park so full of happy smiling families.

It is a tribute to the carnival committee, who have worked so hard. Holding it on a (sunny) Sunday was a master stroke. Let's hope they can order the same sunshine for next year!”
