Planning permission granted for first Extra Care Scheme

Date published: 08 June 2013

Planning permission has been granted for the first Extra Care Scheme in the Borough, which is to be built at Hare Hill in Littleborough by mutual housing provider RBH.

Work will start on site later this year with the new homes being ready in 2015.

Extra Care enables older and vulnerable people to live independently in the comfort of their own home with the piece of mind of 24 hour support on site.

There will be a range of services and facilities within the scheme to enhance the residents’ quality of life including a garden, bistro and facilities for hobbies and activities.

Residents will be supported to access facilities in Littleborough including the park, shops and library.

The scheme will also provide a hub of community support for older people in the Pennines.

The development has been designed with input from RBH’s residents, the local community and in conjunction with RMBC’s Social Care team.

Clare Tostevin, Head of Strategy and Regeneration at RBH said: “Housing for older people is a key priority for RBH and Rochdale Council. There is a growing older population in the borough and we recognise there is a need for a range of good quality and affordable housing options to meet these needs. Currently there isn’t any purpose built extra care provision within the borough and so RBH is delighted to be given the opportunity to provide these much needed facilities.

"The scheme, which has been designed by Pozzoni architects, is set to provide a welcoming place where residents will find privacy, support, comfort and companionship; a building they are proud to call home.

"The scheme will offer a community asset that we hope the people of Littleborough will be proud of for years to come."
