Important to report crime

Date published: 07 June 2013

A resident from Rochdale called her sister after she could hear an ongoing argument taking place at the house next door earlier this week. After confessing she was too scared to call police, her sister said she would do it instead. She called 999 and explained that she wasn’t in the area but knew that someone needed help.

Officers were quick to respond and went immediately to the house and arrested a man for assault.

Greater Manchester Police is encouraging people to come forward to report crime, highlighting the importance of third and fourth party reporting.

Detective Inspector Andy Butterworth said: “We cannot stress enough the importance of calling 999 if you believe there is a threat to life or property, be it yours or anyone else’s.

“We understand that at times it takes courage to do this and certain circumstances may prevent you from wanting to pick up the phone to us. If that is the case then talking to someone you trust and asking them to call police for you could make a huge difference.

“This particular incident demonstrates that police will take reports seriously and act quickly even if we receive the information via a fourth party. As a result of that neighbours actions we were able to provide the help that was needed.

“If you know of someone that is a victim or has been a victim of domestic abuse we have specially-trained officers who can support the victim and get them the help they need to rebuild their lives.”

Call the Women’s Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0161 636 7525 or go to www.endthefear.co.uk for information on how to stop abuse.
