Work has started to renew lighting and safety barriers around the Rochdale junction of the M62.
The £1.5m scheme focuses on a mile of motorway between junction 20 and the Broad Lane overbridge and will involve some overnight slip-road closures.
The junction forms the interchange with the A627(M) which serves Rochdale and Oldham.
The three-month project should be completed by the end of August, the Highways Agency said.
