Man severely injured in chainsaw accident

Date published: 31 May 2013

A man severely injured himself with a chainsaw this evening (Friday 31 May) by sawing into his own leg after a chunk of the tree he was cutting came down, knocking him onto the roof of a shed with a section of tree that had fallen onto his ladder perched precariously above him.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to Rooley Moor Road at around 8pm.

Fire Service Watch Manager Paul Wilkinson said: "The ambulance crews were there when we arrived and had got a ladder to the roof but they needed us to make the tree secure so that it didn't fall on top of the casualty.

"We used lines to guide the chunk of tree away should it have started falling.

"It was a very unusual incident to deal with."

The injured man was taken to Manchester Royal Infirmary.
