Volunteer to make a difference to the lives of children

Date published: 31 May 2013

People in Rochdale are being urged to mark Volunteer Week (1-7 June) by volunteering for the NSPCC to help end cruelty to children. The children’s charity would welcome new support from anyone who would like to make a difference to the lives of children.

The NSPCC has a wide variety of volunteering opportunities available across Rochdale, including volunteering for ChildLine, fundraising, donating time, resources or facilities, or joining one of its fundraising groups.

Louise Stimson, NSPCC head of local fundraising in the north west said: “Volunteers are at the heart of what we do. They make the biggest contribution to all our work. There are many ways people can support us and our local events in the area. Knowing that you are making a difference to the lives of children is rewarding and inspiring. We’d love to hear from you if you are interested in getting involved.”

Louise added: “There’s no minimum time commitment for volunteering. You can give as much or as little time as you have. We would really appreciate any support people can give, so all we ask is for volunteers to be committed to supporting the charity’s aims and enjoy helping us achieve these”.

There are many different ways people can help support the NSPCC. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Organise your own fundraising activity, whether it’s out and about, at home, at school or in the office. Here are a few examples: tea parties and picnics, danceathons, zumba evenings, concerts and open gardens, quizzes and swap shop fashion evening.
  • Take part in one of our fantastic sporting events including: running, cycling, triathlons, sky diving and some extreme events and raise sponsorship
  • Become a volunteer in one of the many roles on offer at the NSPCC, including volunteering for the new ChildLine Schools Service
  • Join one of our local committees – make friends and have fun at the same time
donate raffle or auction prizes for NSPCC events
  • Place a collection tin on shop counters or other public areas
  • Have a spring clean and swap or sell frocks, bags or shoes to friends
  • Fund raise at work or through your business
  • Take part in a fun-filled summer activity such as our HACK (Hike Against Cruelty to Kids), a 7-mile family walk or a 22-mile challenge walk in the Calderdale countryside around Halifax, West Yorkshire, taking place on Saturday 6 July.

Louise continued: “We are looking for people across the area who are committed to helping the NSPCC. Whether you have a few hours to spare or would simply value the opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills, the NSPCC needs your help”

“Each and every volunteer plays a vital role in enabling us to help families in need and protect vulnerable children and young people. Join this fantastic campaign to make a difference for children and see the difference it could make to your own life”.
