Rochdale school wins first prize in ‘Decorate Your Compost Bin’ competition

Pupils from St Edward's CE Primary School, decorated bin proved to be blooming marvellous as the judges panel awarded them first prize in the under 11s category

A summer meadow inspired design developed by children at a Rochdale school has claimed first prize in Garden Organic’s ‘Decorate Your Compost Bin’ competition.

The pupils from St Edward's CE Primary School, decorated bin proved to be blooming marvellous as the judges panel awarded them first prize in the under 11s category.

Divided into the two categories of under 11s and 11 –18 year olds, Garden Organic’s ‘Decorate Your Compost Bin’ competition was launched back in April to encourage families and the younger generation to get composting. The competition attracted a large number of entries including many from schools and community groups and the winning entries received pocket microscopes and composting books as prizes for their efforts. 

Jane Griffiths, Garden Organic’s Volunteer Mentor Network Manager said: “We had some wonderful entries put forward for the competition with real creativity and imagination showing through in the designs we received.

“It was difficult to choose the overall winners and that is a testament to the quality of entries for the competition. The winning Dalek and Tardis and Summer Meadows just came out on top in the final judging but we would like to pay tribute to all those who took part for producing such wonderfully decorated compost bins.”

The competition ran during International Compost Awareness Week on 6 May, an annual event to promote the importance of composting to a wide variety of people and groups.

A range of fun and informative activities took place as part of the week this year with Garden Organic's national network of Volunteer Master Composters out and about at shows, events and in local communities promoting the benefits of home composting.
