Backdoor Music Project, Rochdale has won £15,582 funding from the Youth Music Programme to run an alternative music school during term time with young people aged 16 and under from Youth Music.

The young people will be working together after school to learn guitar, drums, keyboard, DJing, making beats and singing/rapping; learning to collaborate together and perform at Backdoor Music Project.

Backdoor won the funding for alternative music school through the Youth Music programme who are the leading UK charity using music to transform the lives of children and young people, particularly those with least opportunity.

Youth Music is funded by Arts Council England with funds from the National Lottery.

Paul Flounders (Backdoor’s Company Secretary) said: “This is a big achievement for Backdoor, Youth Music funding is one of the most prestigious funds to secure, it’s like a quality mark for what we’re doing here.

"We want beginner and intermediate young musicians to come and learn to play, perform and enjoy everything we have to offer here at Backdoor.”

John Swallow (Project Manager) said: “Backdoor have put together a new team of junior music tutors drawn from the best youth bands at Backdoor and led by Chris Addington, one of Greater Manchester’s most experienced Rock and alternative music teachers.

"School of Rock and alternative music will start after the half term break at a subsidised cost of just £2 per session because of the grant.

"It’s really exciting, the mix of the experience Chris brings and the talent and enthusiasm of the young musicians will create a dynamic learning environment, enabling total beginners to feel at home and confident in learning, alongside well practised young musicians.

"There’s no shortage of talent in the Borough of Rochdale and Backdoor has been proving that for years”

To launch the new school, Backdoor is running a beginners Rock School every day over the half term holiday starting on Monday 27 May, costing just £25 for the whole week.
