Poet Laureate confirms Rochdale festival appearance

Date published: 15 May 2013

Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy will take part in the first Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival this autumn.

The three day event will feature Carol Ann reading some of her most famous work, accompanied by musician John Sampson and a book signing by the celebrated poet, who was honoured with the title in 2009 and is the first female Poet Laureate.

The three day festival that runs 25 to 27 October is promising an inspiring schedule of events covering drama, dance, music, theatre, films and visual arts.

The festival will also include a series of live performances and family friendly activities, all linked to literature and philosophy, with the full programme due to be revealed in July.

Councillor Peter Williams, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Customer Services said he hoped the festival will give people the opportunity to learn something new and do something a little different: “The festival is already shaping up to be a fantastic event and I hope it will be the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in the creation and appreciation of the written word in our borough. To welcome the Poet Laureate at the very first Rochdale Literature and Ideas Festival is a massive boost and sets the standard for years to come.”

The festival will take place at various venues across the borough and is aimed at all ages, providing a chance to get together with others to share or discover a passion for reading and books.

The festival is all down to the generosity of Annie and Frank Maskew, a Rochdale couple who shared a passion for reading and thinking, and originally met in Rochdale Library. They bequested a sum of money to be used on resources and events related to literature, and philosophy to ensure classic works are available for future generations.

Literature Development Officer Suzanne Heslan added: “There will be a different arts theme each day, with a specific literary and philosophical link to provide wide appeal. We’re really looking forward to delivering colourful and inspiring events to attract a new audience to reading and literature, and we’re absolutely delighted Carol Ann will be joining us.”

The festival, organised by Rochdale Borough Council, is funded by the Maskew Collection and the Arts Council’s Grants for the Arts Award.
