Man jailed over hit-and-run killing of Callum Hilton

Date published: 14 May 2013

The man who killed Callum Hilton in a hit-and-run crash has been jailed for six years, four months.

Callum, 16, of Middleton, was hit by a car as he crossed Stand Lane in Radcliffe on 3 November.

Steven Thomas Quinn, 33, from Radcliffe had pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving at an earlier hearing at Bolton Crown Court.

Police said Quinn had consumed "numerous alcoholic drinks" before he hit Callum.

He was with three friends going to the Hawthorn Hotel to ask directions to a house party in Bury.

Police said Callum and one of his friends were crossing the road when Quinn's car hit Callum sending him tumbling down the road.

The car did not stop and was driven off.

Passers-by stopped to help Callum and tried to give him first aid until the emergency services arrived, but he died in hospital from serious head injuries.

Police said when they arrested Quinn the following day and asked him about a broken wing mirror, he said he thought had struck a post.

Quinn's phone was seized and officers discovered text conversations where he told a friend he could not remember what happened because he was so drunk.

Collision reconstruction specialists later established Quinn was driving at about 40mph on the 30mph road.

Det Insp Amber Waywell said: "Callum's mum and granddad, who raised him, have suffered an unimaginable loss.

"A car can be a lethal weapon and sadly that has been borne out and robbed Callum's family of a much-loved young man."
