Clean up creates space for flowers
Date published: 13 May 2013
The Rochdale Environmental Action Group (REAG) has cleared land on Clara Street so that flowers and vegetables can be planted.
REAG believe the land is an ideal place for growing vegetables and flowers and hope local residents will play a major part in the land's development and future maintenance.
During the clean up, the group collected 21 bags of rubbish and litter, despite the rain and bad weather conditions. The group also moved pieces of heavy carpet, furniture, cans and plastic bottles.
Adam Davies, a university student who joined the clean up for the first time, said: “It was a very positive initiative and everyone should take responsibility to improve the environment.”
REAG believe that open spaces filled with litter, rubbish and derelict buildings in the Borough of Rochdale are an eyesore and give negative perceptions about Rochdale. They are asking the people of Rochdale, and those who work and use services in the town, to help improve the environment and make Rochdale cleaner, safer and greener.
A spokesman for the group said: "We cannot afford such negativity and should change these perceptions into positives ones."
