Wardle High School do their bit for Cancer Research UK

Date published: 11 May 2013

Friday 24 April saw two Wardle High School bands give a special performance in aid of Cancer Research UK. Wardle High School Junior Band and Training Band performed a concert at St Paul's Church, Norden. They were welcomed by the ladies of the Cancer Research UK committee and raised over £1000 for the charity.

The event was organised by Dorothy Butterworth on behalf of Cancer Research UK, with the bands being conducted by Gwen Smith. Janet Emsley compèred the whole concert. Park Cakes, a local company with seventy years of baking tradition, kindly provided refreshments for the evening.

Both bands gave a fantastic performance and thoroughly enjoyed being able to perform for the benefit of such a great charity. Dorothy Butterworth commented on the evening: ‘Everyone was full of praise for how it had gone, the children were lovely.’

Cancer Research UK is the world's leading charity dedicated to saving lives through research. Funded entirely by the public, they are working to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. They are the only charity fighting over 200 cancers.

Wardle High School pupils are always keen to raise money for charities.

Year 7 have recently fund-raised for Cancer Research UK through a non-uniform day which they planned themselves. They were inspired to do this as a fellow pupil has been fighting Leukaemia, this heightened their awareness of the effects of the disease and they pledged to raise money for research. Three pupils, who will represent the whole year group, were invited to present their cheque, in the presence of the Mayoress, at the Cancer Research coffee morning at the Town Hall on the 8 May.
