Young School Gardener of the Year nominations

Date published: 08 May 2013

Keen gardener and children’s TV star Dominic ‘Dom’ Wood has joined forces with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to call on UK teachers to nominate their star pupils for the 2013 RHS Young School Gardener of the Year award as the 18 May deadline looms. Last year over 1,700 North West schools took part in the RHS Campaign for School Gardening.

St Edward's C of E  School has raised beds, a gardening club run by a lunchtime supervisor, a sensory garden and a woodland area.

All Souls' C. E. Primary and Nursery School has a growing area in the grounds with four beds for rotation, some soft fruit and apple trees. They also have a shed, water butts, wormery and compost bins and an overgrown wildlife area.

Junior Wardens on Kirkholt have a garden is on a balcony. The balcony is split into two, on one side there is fruit and vegetables growing and on the other they grow flowers. The fruit and veg  grown is used in cookery classess.

Falinge Junior Wardens have planted and grown garlic, onions, potatoes and much more, that in time they hope to sell locally.

Gardening is now proposed to be added to the school curriculum in 2014, so it is a perfect time to celebrate horticultural skills in young people.

Schools that successfully nominate finalists will receive up to £500 worth of gardening vouchers and tools to develop outdoor projects. The overall winner will get to spend a day at their nearest RHS Garden, working alongside RHS gardeners and receive family tickets to either RHS Flower Show Tatton Park or RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2014. Runners-up will also get a personal tour of an RHS Garden.

School staff and teachers are invited to nominate inspiring pupils by simply filling out a short form (found here: www.rhs.org.uk/schoolgardening) by 18 May. A shortlist of 16 pupils, from four age categories, will then be given digital cameras for their schools to make videos describing why they should be named RHS Young School Gardener of the Year 2013.
