Street naming policy for fallen Armed Service personnel adopted by Council
Date published: 03 May 2013

Councillor Alan McCarthy
As the Armed Forces Champion for Rochdale Councillor Alan McCarthy submitted a motion to the Full Council meeting in April for the implementation of a policy with regard to the naming of streets after fallen service personnel.
The motion was adopted as follows:
That this Council supports the implementation of a policy of offering families of fallen service personnel who have died in active duty from the Borough of Rochdale a chance to have a street or road named after their loved one. Such lasting recognition, if this were the wishes of the family, could be a poignant way of demonstrating the community’s admiration for those who serve and the value the whole country places on their courage and patriotism. On each occasion, the Council will consult with bereaved families before deciding on the street name and offering them a role during the street naming ceremony.
This was supported unanimously and is subsequently now the policy of council.
