Rochdale celebrates Fairtrade Fortnight

Date published: 01 April 2013

In March, Rochdale celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight. Over the two weeks, dozens of events were held and hundreds of people took part to raise awareness of fairtrade and promote fairtrade products.

Events included ones at schools such at St James’ at Wardle, Caldershaw in Norden and All Souls School, Heywood.

Other highlights included a Co-op Fairtrade Wine tasting session in Norden, a fairtrade fun day at the Pioneers Museum and product tasting events at Bamford Church and Rochdale Market. Fair for the All, the only place in Rochdale that sells only fairtrade products, also put on events.

The Chairman of Rochdale Fairtrade Forum said: "I was really pleased to see so many people and organisations holding events.

"Things are very tough for everybody in the borough at the moment. But this borough is one that believes in fairness globally.

"The co-operative movement was born here and its people have a long tradition of championing fairness. Fairness is in our DNA.

"Fairness is at the centre of the Fairtrade movement and Rochdale has been internationally recognised as an area that promotes this ideal.

"We will soon be applying to the fairtrade foundation to reaffirm Rochdale as a fairtrade town.

"Being a fairtrade town is an excellent accolade for the borough. It’s a mark that we believe in fairness.

"I would urge everyone to think about continuing to use fairtrade products and help us achieve that mark.

"And if you want to get involved, please come and join the Fairtrade Family we are building."
