Charity calls for Rochdale residents to Walk for Diabetes

Date published: 29 April 2013

The Rochdale Canal Walk for Diabetes, on Sunday 9 June, is part of a national series of sponsored events aiming to encourage people to be more physically active.

Starting at Hollingworth Lake, the five or nine-mile sponsored walk along the canal is open to anybody who wishes to help raise money for the cause.

A spokesperson for Diabetes UK said: “Walking is an excellent way to keep fit and combined with a healthy balanced diet it can reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes.

“Money raised from the walks will help us continue our vital work in reducing the rising tide of Type 2 diabetes, fund life-changing research into the condition and help everyone with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes manage their condition effectively.”

In the UK more than seven million people are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

This year Diabetes UK are working in partnership with Truvia, the calorie-free sweetener, to organise the sponsored walks and provide free goodie bags for fundraisers.

Anyone who can not make the Rochdale Canal walk is encouraged to organise their own sponsored walk, with possible ideas including a walk with colleagues or opting to walk to work for a week.

Those who would like to get involved should contact Diabetes UK, who are happy to help with ideas.
