Students glimpse life in the fire service

Date published: 29 April 2013

Students from Hopwood Hall College visited Heywood Community Fire Station recently to learn more about what makes a good fire-fighter.

The visit was part of the work with students from the uniformed public services department at the College. The department is dedicated to providing students with all the skills and qualities needed to pursue a successful career in any of the uniformed public services.

The trip to Heywood Community Fire Station gave students the chance to meet the fire-fighters and get hands on experience with the fire service equipment and operational procedures used by the crews.

As part of the visit, students took part in the early morning parade, with each student being allocated a riding position on the ‘Pumps’ before shadowing the operation fire-fighter during morning equipment checks.

The checks were followed by a PE session, emphasising the importance of physical fitness within the services to allow members to carry out their roles efficiently.

The students then took part in drill sessions which included a simulation of a road traffic collision (RTC) rescue and saw them practicing basic water drills along with learning about pumping skills and hose management.

Students commented on how much they had enjoyed the day and wanted to know when they could return. The crew were equally complimentary, commenting on how impressed they were by how positive, enthusiastic, hardworking and polite the students were.
