The headteacher stabbed in a horrific attack has been named as Gillian Kay of Propps Hall Primary School in Failsworth.
Police were called to the 39-year-old's home in Shaw Road, Thornham, shortly after 5pm on Friday, where she had been stabbed three times to the face and neck with a screwdriver.
Gillian had to be airlifted to Wythenshaw Hospital for treatment, where she remains in a serious, although not life-threatening condition.
Lucy Greenwood, deputy head at Propps Hall School said that it is a very difficult time for the school community.
She added: "I can confirm that our headteacher, Gillian Kay, was taken to hospital on Friday. We can not say much publicly at this stage because a police investigation is ongoing and we must not hinder that process.
"School business will continue as normal but clearly this is a difficult time.
"Everyone who knows Gillian will be concerned. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, and her family."
Police stressed that speculation about the incident being a 'neighbourly dispute' is wrong.
A 47-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody for questioning.
